Wings of Determination: Lai Chi-wai Adaptive Solo Pilot Training

In 2024, renowned athlete and advocate Lai Chi-wai began a new and remarkable journey by embarking on an adaptive solo paragliding pilot training program. Organized by the AeroClub Charity Foundation in collaboration with CCC Tam Lee Lai Fun Memorial Secondary School, this groundbreaking initiative showcased Lai’s determination to break barriers and redefine possibilities in adaptive aviation. Lai Chi-wai, a former professional climber and motivational speaker from Hong Kong, is a four-time champion of the Asian Rock Climbing Championships and the first Chinese winner of the X-Games in extreme sports. In 2011, a serious traffic accident left him paraplegic. Undeterred, he continued to pursue his passion for climbing, notably ascending Hong Kong’s Lion Rock in 2016 while in a wheelchair. During the adaptive solo pilot training, Lai demonstrated exceptional resilience and determination. The program was meticulously designed to equip him with essential skills, from ground handling to the technicalities of solo flight. Under expert guidance and with adaptive equipment, he faced each challenge with the unwavering spirit of an athlete who has never stopped reaching for the skies. This transformative experience underscores the AeroClub Charity Foundation’s commitment to empowering individuals to soar beyond their limits and embrace freedom in its truest form.
